Portfolio - Close Encounters

Mission Statement – To create a portfolio of images of everyday objects which examines their fine detail and textures

The idea for this portfolio came to me after I saw the results from some lens experiments I was trying. The test images I had produced of various objects showed an incredible amount of detail and were very "close-up" if not in the realms of macro images. The intention of this project is to look at everyday objects which people can relate to in more detail. There is so much that we take for granted because we use it every day and therefore do not take time to study the detail. Coins and bank notes are good examples where fine detail is applied as a security measure but never really appreciated by the users.

The areas I examined were food, money, jewellery, plants and clocks. Each topic started as a still life composition to get the overall picture and then a more detailed examination of some of the elements within the composition. The food images were done in the class studio as class projects, while the remaining pictures where taken at home in a makeshift studio (breakfast room).

The major part of the planning for this project was deciding on the subjects and creating a still life around them. It took me some time to decide on the individual topics and there were many more ideas, which were equally relevant, but had to be discarded because of time and the limitation of only presenting between 10 and 20 images.

The images displayed in the same format and organisation as they were submited to the City & Guilds examination board. The images have been kept small to reduce download time and make the pages faster to load. If you uses Explorer4 or Navigator4, you wll get a Dynamic HTML version of the pages which are a bit slicker. Please click on the graphic below to see the portfolio.
